Bangladesh Ambassador presents credentials to President of Cabo Verde

Bangladesh Ambassador to Portugal, Tarik Ahsan presented his credentials to President of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) Mr. José Maria Pereira Neves in the city of Mindelo of the island of São Vicente on 17 March 2022 as the third non-resident Ambassador of Bangladesh to that country with residence in Lisbon.

In an audience after the credential ceremony, the President warmly congratulated Bangladesh Ambassador on presentation of the credentials. The President expressed his belief that friendly relation between Bangladesh and Cabo Verde would be further strengthened during the tenure of Mr. Tarik Ahsan as the non-resident Ambassador to his country.  

Ambassador Tarik Ahsan conveyed the greetings of Bangladesh President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the Cabo Verde President. Underscoring the need of strengthening relation between Bangladesh and Cabo Verde, the Ambassador proposed the idea that the two countries establish a mechanism for periodic contact between senior officials of Foreign Ministries of the two countries. Terming the trade between two countries as not up to its potentials, he suggested that Cabo Verde consider importing quality produces at affordable price from Bangladesh, such as, RMG, pharmaceuticals, electronics, ICT products and even ships. The Ambassador briefed the President on Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in socio-economic development, particularly in women empowerment, health and education as well as fast economic growth, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He also attached importance to working together at multilateral fora on the common issues of concern, particularly climate change and migration. He requested for continued support of Cabo Verde at UN and other international bodies on the issue of speedy repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar.

The President expressed keen interest in the expanding cooperation with Bangladesh, particularly in the areas of trade and investment. He said that his country recognizes all the developments that have taken place in recent years in Bangladesh, and he congratulates the government and people of Bangladesh on the transformation of the country to a higher level of development. He concurred on the need of close cooperation on the issues of climate change and migration and assured continued support to Bangladesh on the issue of Rohingya in the UN framework. The President conveyed his greetings to President Md. Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the people of Bangladesh. The President assured the Ambassador of all cooperation and support during his tour of duty as Ambassador to Cabo Verde.

Soon after the meeting with the President, Ambassador Tarik Ahsan made a media statement before the local print and electronic media.

Earlier on 16 March 2022, Ambassador Tarik Ahsan had a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration of Cabo Verde Mr. Rui Alberto de Figueiredo Soares, during handing over copies of the credential papers to him. Enhanced economic cooperation and the possibility of appointing Honorary Consuls in each other’s country was discussed. The Ambassador also sought support of Cabo Verde for Bangladesh candidatures at UNHRC and ICAO.
