H.E. Mr. Tarik Ahsan

Ambassador

 

Mr Tarik Ahsan is a career diplomat. He joined Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs Cadre) on 26 January 1991. He currently holds the rank of a Secretary to the Government.

Between the years 1991 and 1996, he served as desk officer at different Sections of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs such as Personnel; SAARC; Americas; and Audit.

In his first overseas diplomatic assignment, he was Second Secretary and First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York in the years 1996 to 1999. During this time, he participated in many meetings of United Nations under First (Disarmament) Committee, Fourth (Political) Committee and Sixth (Legal) Committee. He was engaged in the negotiations notably for elaboration of Statute of International Criminal Court. In the next stint, he served as Counsellor at Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1999 to 2002.

Back to the headquarters, he was Director for Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2006. In this capacity, he participated in quite a number of meetings on migration at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. Subsequently, he was Counsellor and Minister at Bangladesh Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia from 2006 to 2008; and Minister at Bangladesh Embassy in Berlin, Germany from 2008 to 2010. During his term in Berlin, he served as Chargé d’Affaires for over 2 years.

During his tenure as Director General for International Organizations at Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka from 2010 to 2014, he participated in numerous meetings of regional and international organizations such as Commonwealth, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Deveopoing-8 Organization, Indian Ocean Rim Association, Asia Cooperation Dialogue and so on. He led Bangladesh delegation to many of the meetings at the senior officials level.

He was the 14th Bangladesh High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from 30 October 2014 to 30 June 2016. He was the 13th High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Pakistan from 14 July 2016 to 26 September 2020.

He joined Bangladesh Embassy in Lisbon on 05 October 2020 and presented credentials to the President of Portugal as the 3rd Bangladesh (resident) Ambassador to Portugal on 18 December 2020.

Education: He was in the combined honour lists of top twenty students of Dhaka Board both for the Secondary School Certificate exam and for the Higher Secondary Certificate exam. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He secured a Post-graduate Diploma in International Relations and Development from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), the Hague, the Netherlands.

Professional Training: He completed Foundation Course on Public Administration at Telecom Staff College of Bangladesh and Foreign Affairs Course at BCS (Administration) Academy of Bangladesh. He received Orientation Course on UN Participation from United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in New York. From Nanyang Politechnic in Singapore, he received ICT Course for Government Officials. He attended the Workshop on WTO Negotiations organized by Paris-Sud University at Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS).

Other Activities: He was an amateur news presenter of the Bangladesh Television from 1991 to 1996. As a student, he was an active member of Leo Club. He received training in dramatics. He edited college publications of poetry. He was a contributor of articles to newspapers.

Family Information: Married to Mrs. Mahajabeen Ahsan. Blessed with one daughter Miss Nabila Jabeen Ahsan.
