Straddling the Tropic of Cancer in eastern South Asia, Bangladesh, a country of six seasons and hundreds of rivers, is endowed with an abundant diversity of flora and fauna. In harmony with nature, Bangalees are resilient, vibrant and open-minded. This gives Bangalees a  deep-rooted and unique cultural identity. Banglalees are proud of  their language Bangla not just because it is the 6^th most spoken language in the world, but also because of its originality and richness in literature and cultural expressions. UNESCO, in 1999, declared 21 February as International Mother Language Day in commemoration of embrace of martyrdom by Bangalee youths on 21 February 1952 in their movement for linguistic rights. 

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh, while remaining a major agricultural producer, has been transforming itself into an industrial and knowledge-based economy. It is now the 41^st largest economy and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. By tackling natural disasters and floods with success, Bangladesh has become a role model for disaster management in the world.

People of Bangladesh and Portugal cherish their historic contact through Portuguese exploration, missionaries and trade from early 16^th century. In recognition of excellent relation with Portugal, Bangladesh has been maintaining a resident Embassy in Lisbon since the year 2012.
